Backstory

Character-written background and survival history.

Jace Smoke Maddox was born just outside Uvalde, South Texas, where the land was dry, the summers were unforgiving, and a person's word carried more weight than a contract. He grew up on a struggling cattle ranch run by three generations of the Maddox family. His father taught him to ride horses before he could properly read, his grandfather taught him to shoot with a battered Winchester lever-action rifle that had been in the family for over a century, and his mother made sure he understood that surviving wasn't just about strength—it was about keeping your head when everyone else lost theirs.

Life wasn't easy. Droughts, debt, and declining cattle prices forced the family to work twice as hard for half as much. Jace learned mechanics in high school because fixing tractors and pickups was cheaper than replacing them. By twenty-two, he could repair diesel engines, weld broken equipment, build fences, and hunt anything from feral hogs to deer. Friends joked he was born a hundred years too late, more cowboy than modern man.

His nickname, "Smoke," came after a massive brush fire tore through neighboring ranches when he was seventeen. While most people evacuated, Jace spent nearly two days helping firefighters rescue trapped families and livestock. When he finally emerged, blackened with soot and barely recognizable, one firefighter simply said, "Hell, son... you walked out of the smoke." The name stuck.

When the Collapse began, nobody in Texas understood how quickly civilization would unravel. At first it was supply shortages, cyberattacks, blackouts, and economic panic. Then came war. Satellites disappeared, communications failed, governments fractured, and within months the global climate spiraled into chaos. Dust storms gave way to freezing temperatures no scientist had predicted.

Jace survived the first years by turning the family ranch into a fortress. Solar panels, rainwater collection, livestock, and old-fashioned self-reliance kept a small community alive far longer than anyone expected. But as the climate worsened, crops failed, wells froze, and organized raider groups became more dangerous than starvation.

Five years after the Collapse, the ranch fell.

A coalition of heavily armed scavengers attacked during one of the worst winter storms Texas had ever seen. They came for fuel, livestock, and ammunition. By sunrise the ranch was burning. Most of the survivors scattered in different directions. Jace escaped with little more than his grandfather's Winchester, a backpack of supplies, and the belief that staying in Texas meant certain death.

For years he wandered north and west with refugee caravans, trading his mechanical skills for food and protection. He repaired generators, rebuilt engines from scrap, and learned enough Russian from former oil workers and displaced sailors to survive beyond North America.

Eventually rumors spread of surviving settlements across the Bering region—isolated communities connected by dangerous sea crossings. Against every ounce of common sense, Jace joined an expedition that crossed the frozen remains of the Bering Strait. Nearly half the group died before reaching the Russian Far East.

His journey finally led him to Sahkal, a vast, frozen island where abandoned cities, snow-buried forests, and crumbling military installations stretch as far as the eye can see.

Nothing in Texas had prepared him for endless snow. The cold was an enemy that never slept. Water froze solid. Metal burned exposed skin. Every breath hurt. Yet Sahkal reminded him of home in unexpected ways. Vast wilderness, isolated people, and a culture that respected hard work over words. He adapted. He traded his cowboy hat for insulated gear but kept the hat tucked safely inside his pack. His grandfather's lever-action rifle remained his trusted companion, repaired countless times with scavenged parts and careful craftsmanship.

Ten years after the apocalypse, Jace has become something of a legend among the scattered settlements of Sahkal. Traders call him the Texan Ghost because he appears through blizzards, fixes broken machinery, helps honest people, and disappears before dawn. Raiders know him by another name: Smoke. They say if you see the steam from his breath in the snow, you've already made your last mistake.

Jace doesn't believe he's a hero. He's simply trying to live by the lessons he learned under the Texas sun: protect your people, keep your promises, and never leave someone behind if you can still help them.

Deep down, he still dreams that somewhere beyond the frozen horizon, humanity is rebuilding. Until he finds that place, he'll keep walking through the endless white wastes of Sahkal with his lever-action rifle slung over one shoulder, searching for a future in a world buried beneath the snow.
